This short course (210 hours) provides the Registered Nurse Division 2 with knowledge of the principles of pharmacology, the practice of safely administering oral, topical, subcutaneous and intramuscular medications, monitoring the outcomes of the patient, and applying safe nursing practices to work within the scope of medication administration of a Division 2 nurse according to the new legislation in Victoria.
Course Delivery
The course duration is either 6 months including 1 day per week for 20 weeks of classroom attendance followed by clinical placement or 3 months including 2 days per week for 10 weeks of classroom attendance and then clinical placement.
Once you have successfully completed the theory and laboratory assessments, there is a clinical placement of 76 hours at clinical venues nominated by Health Skills Australia. This may be 2-3 days per week over 4 weeks or Monday to Friday for two weeks – mainly morning shifts (7am – 3.30pm).
The course consists of 2 units of competency of nominally 210 hours. (See Course Unit table to the right)
Selection Criteria
You are required to:
- be currently registered with the NBV as an RN Div 2
- successfully complete a VETASSESS Literacy and Numeracy Assessment prior to the commencement of the course. All applicants must demonstrate skills in literacy and communication to National Reporting System Level 4 and numeracy to Level 3.
- applicants who trained prior to 1995, need to complete an Anatomy and Physiology bridging program. All other applicants will be assessed individually on their current Anatomy and Physiology knowledge.

Assessments
You will need to show that you have achieved the skills, knowledge and professional attributes required by the course. You will be assessed by a combination of written assignments or tests, oral tests and practical assessments in class, or during a work placement. You will know in advance about the type of assessment and how it will operate. If needed, you will have the chance for reassessment and appeal.
Professional Recognition
Successful graduates will be eligible to apply for endorsement to their registration with the Nurses Board of Victoria. There is mutual recognition by registering bodies in all states of Australia.
What skills will I have when I complete this course?
You will gain skills to legally administer enteral, topical, subcutaneous and intramuscular medications and monitor IV Therapy.

What qualifications will I receive?
When you successfully complete the course, you will be awarded a Statement of Attainment for the two units of competency. You can then apply to the Nurses' Board of Victoria for endorsement for medication administration. This course does not align to a particular Australian Qualifications Framework level but can form part of Diploma of Nursing.
What costs and other fees should I expect?
The cost for the course is approximately $2,000 per person including books, materials and a uniform. This is a fee for service course and therefore there is no eligibility for concession.
Division 2 nurses may be eligible for funding support through the Nurse Policy Branch Division 2 Paid Study Leave Program. All enquiries can be directed to the Nurse Policy Branch, Department of Human Services.

What opportunities for further studies will I have?
These units can be used for the Diploma and Advanced Diploma of Nursing (RN Div 2) or you may be given recognition of prior learning at some universities towards the Bachelor of Nursing for pharmacology.
